As parents, coaches, volunteers and board members, Milton Girls Softball is committed to providing all girls with an experience that fosters positive self-esteem, team spirit and individual growth. It is our goal for each player to have fun while improving her knowledge and skill of the game. We measure success in terms of your daughter being excited to play softball year after year. MEMORIAL DAY FESTIVITES
MEMORIAL DAY FESTIVITIES:
HITTING CONTEST, SPECIAL CEREMONY, AND SENIOR ALL STAR GAME
For Milton Girls Softball, Memorial Day this year has extra special meaning.
In addition to our league hitting contest and senior all star game, there will be a special ceremony for family and friends of our late friend and Board Member Bill Giovannucci.
If your daughter plays softball today, her experience is better due to Bill's efforts. From bullpens to fences to foul poles to anchored bases to hot dogs at all star games and opening day, Gio did it or had a hand in it. Bill coached his twin daughters (Seniors at Milton HS) in youth softball from the earliest stages of the program to 18u this past summer. He would do anything to help make a young girl's softball experience better.
We invite you to join us on Monday evening (5/30) for a very special event.
BEGINNING PITCHING AND CATCHING CLINICS FROM MHS VARSITY SOFTBALL
The Milton high school varsity softball team, in concert with Milton Girls Softball, is offering beginners pitching and catching clinics these next 3 sundays.
Sundays from 2-3:30p. (May 15,22,29)
Catchers will come from 2-230 to work with the high school catchers for 30 minutes, then will catch for the pitchers from 230-330.
The cost is $30, payable Sunday (cash, check or venmo).
These are beginner training sessions that will focus on key drills, fundamentals and supervised repetitions.
A few months ago the Milton Girls Softball community lost one of the best. Bill "Gio" Giovannucci was a coach, board member and a hands-on supporter of Milton Girls Softball. But above all, he was a husband and a father.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support his wife Marianne and his daughters Delia and Sienna. All contributions go directly to them. Your generosity will go to supporting his girls and showing them how much their beloved husband and dad meant to all of us.
Milton Girls Softball (MGS) values the role of women in our program and knows our program is stronger with more women involved. We have set a goal to have 75% female coaches and board members by 2023, and are reaching out to ask – will you be a board member at large, coach or volunteer to help us reach this important initiative?
In 2021, we had 13 female and 33 male head coaches, and our board is only 35% female. So, as you can see, we have a ways to go. MGS needs more women coaches and volunteers at all age levels. Even though the number of female coaches and board members have increased over the years, we are well below even a 50% split.
We know that confident, competitive, and visible female leaders are powerful role models for young girls and athletes. Likewise, inspiring female coaches help to build self-esteem, self-confidence, and keep girls active in softball and other sports. Read Why Women Sport Coaches Matter and 8 reasons why girls need more female coaches.
We are committed to building upon our coaching development program and expanding our volunteering opportunities. No experience needed and we will support you. We are especially looking for female head coaches and board member, yet also welcome help with:
Assistant coaching
Grant writing
Fundraising
Website support
Facilities
Uniforms
Equipment
Event support
We are happy to answer any questions you have. Please feel free to reply to this email or reach out to one of our female board members:

It is with great sadness that Milton Girls Softball shares the recent passing of Board Member Bill Giovannucci.
"Leave this place a little better than the way you found it" is a simple goal for all of us; in Bills case, our town and our program are better off for his efforts. The next time you (or your daughter) takes a swing, be happy Bill put so much of his time in to make the experience something great.
This fall Milton Girls Softball will have five consecutive Sundays of hitting drills, hitting instruction and contests.

You must register online for tryouts. Walk-up registrations are not accepted. Click here to register.
What is Needed
Girls should wear their summer softball or Monarchs jersey with name/number, glove, cleats, bat, and water.
The Tryout Process
Players are scored and evaluated in general categories: infield and outfield skills, throwing and catching, and hitting and bunting. Also, pitchers and catchers will have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills at the end of the tryout. Each player will participate in 4 tryout stations.
Outfield Station: Players will be given the opportunity to field fly balls that may ask them to move to their left, right, center, forward, and behind them. Players will be evaluated on their ability to track the ball, catches with two hands, footwork, and their arm strength to make strong throws with minimal bounce to both their cut and home plate.
Infield Station: Balls will be split up into two rounds. The first set will be fielded at shortstop. They may be asked to move from side to side in order to field cleanly and make an accurate strong throw to first base. The second round of balls will be fielded in a similar manner from the 2nd base position, again throwing balls accurately to 1st base. Girls will be evaluated on their:
Form: Evaluated on ready position, charges, positioned with head up and butt down, hands out front with throwing hand above glove, secures the ball.
Fielding Range: Evaluated on the player's ability to get to balls and secure with two hands
Arm Strength: Evaluated on ability to make strong throws to 1st base with no bounce, line drive throws
Throwing Accuracy: Evaluated on ability to throw accurately
Hitting Station: Player will receive 10 balls from the pitching machine and she will be asked to put as many of these ball into play as possible. Players will be evaluated on the following: hitting mechanics, contact, and power.
Bunting Station: Player will receive 5 balls that they will be asked to bunt as many as possible. Players will be evaluated on their bunting mechanics and ability to keep the ball in fair territory.
Pitching/Catching Station (Optional): Because not all girls pitch or play catcher, this portion of the tryout is not scored. However, coaches will be evaluating pitchers and catchers to understand their abilities. Pitchers will be evaluated on their form and mechanics, control, velocity, accuracy, and command. Catchers will be evaluated on their form and mechanics, arm strength, throw from home, receiving, blocking, and footwork.
During the tryouts it is important to note that coaches and evaluators will also be taking into account the attitudes, hustle, and softball IQs displayed by each of the players as well. These intangibles will also be factored into team formations.
DRAGON AND MURTAGH
RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS
FROM MILTON GIRLS SOFTBALL
We are pleased to announce Milton High School seniors Nicole Dragon and Molly Murtagh are this year’s scholarship recipients. Milton Girls Softball (MGS) started a scholarship program in 2013 to be awarded annually to two seniors that have participated in MGS for a minimum of four years and are planning to continue their education. This scholarship is a one-time award to assist with finances of college, vocational school or any enlisted branch of the US Armed Forces.
Nicole Dragon wrote about how softball is a big part of her life. "Softball was a constant in my life for years that formed a competitive spirit around athletics that I have carried through to today...Not only did I gain a competitive spirit from my many years of Milton Girls Softball, but I also learned how to love the game no matter what the outcome of a game was."
Molly Murtagh shared "how Milton Girls Softball has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. Whether it be as a player, coach, ump, or clinic helper, this program has taught me to speak up to help myself and others. She also wrote about her experience as an assistant coach. "Alongside Coach Sally and Coach Lovett, I was able to help the girls learn to love the sport and to not be scared of the ball or striking out...This program is the reason I love to help others, especially by coaching them. Softball sparked my love for volunteering and I will continue to volunteer in the future."
Applications for next year’s scholarship will be posted online at the start of the 2021 softball spring season. Milton Girls Softball is an independent, non-profit organization committed to providing all girls with an experience that fosters positive self-esteem, team spirit and individual growth through personal achievement and team play.
Our goal is for each player to have fun while gaining knowledge of the game. We endeavor to create and maintain an environment of teamwork, honesty, and fair play with a secondary importance place on winning.
The safety and well-being of our players, families, partners and volunteers is our top priority. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, Milton Girls Softball is taking the following immediate actions:
Freshwomen clinics this Friday March 13th at Milton Academy are cancelled
Pitching clinics this Sunday, March 15th at Milton Academy are cancelled
Clinics at Dirt Dawgs on Sunday, March 15th are cancelled
Monarchs practices through March are cancelled
Capital Fundraising event on March 21st has been postponed - stay tuned for more information.
Coaches meetings starting next week will be rescheduled or be virtual. Guidance will be given out to coaches directly.
No decision to change Opening Day or the start of the season has been made at this time.
To be clear, at this time we do not know of any Milton Girls Softball player, volunteer or family who have been infected, but we must do our part to ensure the safety of all and reduce the risk of this spreading. We will be re-evaluating the situation after this weekend to provide additional guidance. Please let us know if you have any specific concerns or questions.

New Scorecard Installed Thanks to The Friends of Donny Higgins
Milton Girls Softball is excited to share that we have a new scoreboard at Cunningham Park. Due in large part to the donation of the Friends of Donny Higgins, we have installed a new scoreboard at Cunningham Park. The scoreboard will be ready for opening day and will be dedicated during our Opening Day festivities.
The Friends of Donny Higgins is a special charity that promotes local youth sports program and we are grateful for the contribution the organization has made to our program. Donny Higgins was a very special young man whose life was too short. He was a loving husband and father as well as a great son and friend to many. His wife and four children presently live in Milton.
If you would like to show your appreciation for the donation Milton Girls Softball received from the Friends of Donny Higgins, please think about attending the Friends of Donny Higgins Winter Gala on Saturday Feb. 23rd, 7PM at the Westin Boston Waterfront. This is a wonderful event filled with food, drinks, laughs and conversation. Many of us on the board will be attending and we ask that you help support a great cause. Even though I was not one of the best players in MGS, I still felt like I contributed. There was always something to work on and improve on, which made me strive to be a better player. MILTON U10 MULLANEY
WINS THE U10 SOUTH SHORE
SUMMER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
Milton entered the playoffs as the #2 seed with a record of 7-3. After winning a dramatic game on Tuesday, Milton traveled to Welcome Young Field in Quincy to take on undefeated and #1 seed Quincy. Milton U10 Mullaney put a perfect game together with strong defense, timely hitting and clutch pitching to beat Quincy 7-2 and bring home the 2015 U10 South Shore Summer League Championship. MILTON WINS THE 2015 U18 SOUTH SHORE SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIP
MILTON WINS THE
2015 U18 SOUTH SHORE
SUMMER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
On Wednesday, July 29th, Milton U18 hosted Bridgwater at Gile Field in the championship game of the U18 South Shore Summer League Playoffs. Milton had previously beat Bridgewater a week earlier by a score of 6-2. Milton knew Bridgewater would come to play and they would have to play their best to take home the championship.
Bridgewater struck first and jumped out to a 1-0 in the 2nd inning on a blooper to left field that fell in for a hit.
Milton responded in the bottom of the 2nd. With two outs, Jill R. hit a hard single to right. Madeline C. followed with a clutch triple to right center to tie the game at 1.
In the bottom of the third, Milton exploded for 6 runs. Jess B. started off the inning with a base hit (sound familiar?). With one out, Meghara M. singled and Caitlin L. was hit by a pitch. Jess O. followed with a 2-RBI single to center. The rally continued with singles by Jenna C., Eva H. and Shannon F. giving Milton a 7-1 lead.
Milton responded by shutting down Bridgewater with great defense and solid pitching. Olivia F. caught a mile-high fly ball in center field and Caitlin L. made a great outfield catch shutting down a rally. Jess O., Jenna C., and Meghara M. were solid on the left side of the infield making several strong defensive plays.
Pitcher Shannon F. was incredible. For 7 innings she kept Bridgwater off balance (7IP, 1R, 8K).
Milton U18 wins the 2015 U18 South Shore Summer League Championship by beating Bridgewater by a score of 10-1. Milton U18 finishes the season with a record of 11-0-1. Congratulations girls on a great season.
K Program Instructors lead a very attentive group of Kindergarteners
KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM
WRAPS UP SUCCESSFUL SEASON
Milton Girls Softball's Kindergarten Program (K-Program) recently wrapped up a successful spring program. The K Program is an 8-week session designed to introduce kindergarteners to the sport of softball as well as provide an opportunity for them to play and interact in a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment.
The K-Program was run by two experienced directors and instructors for the program. Mike Kinsella is a Milton resident and a 15+ year coach in the Milton Girls Softball program. He is also a professional instructor for Dirt Dawg Sports in Canton. Gary Kelly has been involved with Milton Girls Softball for over 20 years as a coach, league president and board member. Both are tremendous assets to the K Program.
Mike and Gary's philosophy focuses on teaching the developmental aspect more so than the instructional aspect of the sport. However, none of this will matter if it’s not done by having FUN. The K Program is about keeping the girls engaged. This will be done with positive reinforcement, smiling a lot, giving lots of high-fives and keeping the players moving and involved.
The structure of the K Program was about breaking down the actual practice into stations. Stations are efficient, effective, and FUN. This will be done by having a staff of trained instructors and high school players to ensure the direct developmental instruction is consistent and delivered the correct way fundamentally.
Parents were encouraged to be involved if desired. We want parents to learn by observing and/or participating with the goal that parents may coach when their daughters move up to the Freshwomen Division the following year.
The Kindergarten Program is about progression and awareness without the player realizing how much they have learned.

FITZGERALD AND KINSELLA
RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FROM
MILTON GIRLS SOFTBALL
We are pleased to announce that Milton residents and Seniors Sydney FitzGerald and Lauren Kinsella are this year’s scholarship recipients. We started a scholarship program to be awarded annually to two seniors that have participated in the Milton Girls Softball program for a minimum of four years and are planning to continue their education. This scholarship is a one-time award to assist with finances of college, vocational school or any enlisted branch of the US Armed Forces.
Both girls were presented the award at their respective high school award banquet and were honored to be chosen out of so many candidates. When asked what Milton Girls Softball meant to them, Syndey was quick to reply “many of my memories were made on a softball field. Whether playing for a spring or summer team or practicing with my dad in the backyard, these were moments that I was proud for working my absolute hardest. From the start, accomplishing small goals such as getting a hit or striking out 10 batters over the course of a game gave me a kind of personal contentment that I can't explain. The Milton Girls Softball Association helped me develop the confidence that I have needed to survive as I've grown up."
Fontbonne senior Lauren Kinsella had this to say about MGS “the words that first come to my mind regarding Milton Girls Softball are commitment, confidence, team work and compassion. These words are qualities I gained through playing softball since I was a child. All that I am and all I've become have an enormous softball influence. ...
