2011 Lennon Senior Division Playoffs

Lennon Senior Division Championship Game
Saturday, June 18, 2011

The matchup that some had predicted came to fruition as the #1 Seed Rays and the #2 Seed Rockies met for the 2011 Lennon Senior Division Championship Game.  The Rays, making the championship game in the 3rd year of the franchise, have been playing well all season.  The #2 Seed Rockies are making their 4th consecutive appearance in the championship game and are hoping to take home the crown for a second time.

Rockies hurler Shannon F. (7IP, 2R, 15K, 1BB) and Rays ace Julia N. (7IP, 4R, 13K, 0BB) doninated the game and made each team earn every baserunner.

The Rockies struck first with one run in the first on a RBI hit by Shannon F.  The game continued to be a pitcher's duel for the first three innings with the Rockies holding on to a 1-0 lead.  The Rockies rallied for two runs in the 4th with Sarah G. and Shannon F. getting on and Olivia F. hitting a double scoring two runs and giving the Rockies a 3-0 lead.  The Rays rallied but a outstanding catch in left field by Imani W. and two great tagouts by cather Ashley V. kept the Rays off the scoreboard.

The Rockies added another run in the 6th giving them a 4-0 lead.  The Rays rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 7th but that was it as the Rockies held on for the 4-2 win and the 2011 Lennon Senior Division Championship.

The #2 Seed Rockies and the #3 Seed Athletics faced off in semifinal action at Kelly Field.  The Rockies jumped out to an early lead thanks to some clutch hits and outstanding pitching.  The A's rallied and threatened in the last several innings but the Rockies managed to hang on for the 9-2 win.

The #1 Seed Rays took on the #5 Seed Red Sox at Gile Field in a seminfinal matchup.  The Rays had all they could handle edging the upset-minded Red Sox by a score of 10-8.

The Senior Division Playoffs opened up with the #2 Seed Rockies facing the #7 Seed Phillies.  The Rockies battled the Phillies at Andrews Park on Sunday evening. It was a great pitching dual between two of the leagues hardest throwers. Both teams played exceptional playoff defense throughout. In the end the Rockies made a couple more plays than Phillies and prevailed with a 5-0 victory.

The #3 Seed A's jumped to an early lead and held on 13-4 vs. the #6 Seed Pirates.
The Pirates made a valiant effort vs the A's.  Pitching, hitting and fielding were all exceptional.  It was a good effort to end a great season.

The #5 Red Sox jumped out to an early lead and were able to hold on and upset the #4 Seed Diamondbacks 11-10. The Red Sox were led by a sterling 6-inning complete-game outing by Anne N., and 6 strong innings at catcher from Maddie B.  Key defensive gems were turned in by Meg C., Jordan C., and Meredith K., and the key hit of the game was a big blast from Maggie K. to right-center for a double. Steady performances were supplied by Alia S., Charlie G., Elizabeth M., McKenzie D., and Randi C. , helping to propel the team to a great win over a very tough Diamondbacks team that fought back from an 8-run deficit.  With the tying run on 3rd in the last inning, Anne brought on the heat to strike out one of the most feared hitters in the league and secure the Red Sox’ first playoff win in two years.

The #8 Seed Marlins put a scare into the #1 Seed Rays behind terrific outfield play and nice hitting by game MVP Maggie C. Meghera M. continued her all-star season by throwing out three runners trying to take an extra base, as well as a well executed drag bunt to put pressure on the season's top team. Steady defense at first base by Amy T. and strong infield play by Haillie S., Jamie D. and Amanda C. kept the game close.  Team captain Madison P. kept the underdog Marlins loose and focused as fine outfield play by Lauren G., Grace K., and Liz M. kept the Rays in check.  A fine pitching performance by Grace O. kept the game close but strong fielding by the Rays put out a seventh inning rally and the Rays squeaked by with a 9-7 win.
