The Senior Division Playoffs opened up with the #3 Seed D-Backs hosting the #6 Seed Athletics. In the other opening round matchup, the #4 Seed Red Sox hosted the #5 Seed Pirates.
The #4 Athletics jumped out to an early lead with the #3 D-Backs eventually tying it. A back and forth battle by two strong teams with great pitching, stellar defense and heads up playing by everyone. With the game on the line and bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, the Diamondbacks proved too much for the A's in a furious come from behind bid. Final score: D-Backs 13, Athletics 10.
The #4 Red Sox had a knock-down, drag-out battle in their showdown with the #5 Pirates on a beautiful spring evening at Gile field, but managed to prevail in the end, 15-9. The Sox were led by the stellar starting pitching of Anne N., with relief help from Maddie B. (fresh off of the disabled list), and Michaela O. shouldered the load at catcher for 6 strong innings. The offensive heroes for the Sox were Elizabeth M., who smacked a game-changing grand slam, Alia S., who was a perfect 4 for 4, Emma M., who belted what might have been another grand slam if not for the 5-run per inning rule, and Jordan C., who whacked a shot to right field that the Pirates almost pulled in for a spectacular catch, but that ultimately fell for a single. Lauren G. scored the game-clinching run, Morgan C. played her usual stellar defense, Meg C. made a great play at second turning a possible extra-base hit into a routine out at first, and Randi G. provided her usual spark on the bases.
