The Freshwomen Division is for girls in Grades 1 and 2.
We understand that at this age your daughter may be trying different activities. We encourage girls to participate in other activities such as soccer, dance, theater, or lacrosse. Although we hope that your daughter participates in as many games as possible, attendance at every game is not mandatory. As a courtesy, we do ask that you inform your coach if your daughter cannot attend a game.
The season starts in late April and runs until mid-June. Games are typically held on early on Saturdays with game times at 9 and 10:30. Teams also play on Mondays at 6pm.
Girls are also invited to march in the Opening Day Parade in mid-April. And don't forget our annual Freshwomen Skills Challenge during our All Star Saturday Event. It's a great way for the girls to have fun, enjoy softball, and even throw a few water balloons at their coaches! In 2017, the event was held on June 3rd.
Games are 90 minutes with 45-minutes of a structured practice followed by a 45-minute game. This division is instructional with a focus is on fundamentals:
- Field positions
- Base running
- Hitting mechanics
Coaches toss easy pitches to batters and players are encouraged to make plays in the field. We encourage fielders to make throws and attempt to get outs. When an out is recorded (and when it's clearly an out), the batter or runner in question should return to the bench. This division is 100% instructional and although it may initially be a surprise to your player, we use it as a teaching moment. We want girls to understand the rules of the game. She will always get to bat again in the subsequent innings and the probability is that she will be on base.
Keeping safety in mind, girls will be able to play all positions. There are no called strikes, no umpires and the score is not kept.

We are always working to improve the experience for all the girls who play softball. In 2013, we provided every Freshwomen team with five new batting helmets. In 2014, every team will reach new catching equipment as well as new bats. We are also introducing coaching clinics for all coaches prior to the season.
